Bali airport transfer: taxi, ride app or a driver waiting with your name?

Short answer
A driver waiting at arrivals with your name is the calmest option — ours is $20 one way for up to three people with luggage, to one hotel in the south, booked ahead with your flight number. The taxi counter is fine if you didn't book; ride apps are cheapest on paper but pick up from a separate point. Allow 45–90 minutes to Canggu and up to two hours to Ubud.
Your three options at arrivals
Every flight into Ngurah Rai (DPS) ends the same way: out of customs, through the doors, into warm air and a line of people holding signs. From there you have three sensible ways to your hotel, and one to avoid.

The one to avoid: men in the hall asking "taxi, transport?" with no counter and no price. Some are honest; the price is whatever they think you'll pay after a long flight. "No, thank you, I have a driver" ends the conversation.
How long is the drive, really?
Bali's distances are short and its roads are slow. Door to door from the airport, in ordinary traffic, from our drivers' experience:

Between about 16:00 and 19:00 every figure sits at the top of its range, and a Friday-evening landing can be worse. That is when a car you don't have to find, negotiate or wait for is worth the most.
Finding your driver
- Before you land, make sure WhatsApp will work — airport Wi-Fi, a roaming plan or an eSIM. Your driver messages you with his name and where he is standing.
- Immigration and bags take anything from twenty minutes on a quiet morning to more than an hour when several long-haul flights land together. If your flight is delayed or changes, tell us on WhatsApp and the pickup moves with it.
- Walk out of the arrivals exit. Drivers wait just outside, behind the barrier, holding boards. Ours has your name on it.
- He walks you to the car in the parking area. Cars may stop at the kerb for only a couple of minutes — the signs say so — which is why nobody pulls up at the door.
Two things to sort before you fly
- The Bali tourist levy, Rp 150,000 per person, paid online before you arrive. Keep the QR code on your phone; some sights ask for it. More in our entrance fees guide.
- The visa on arrival. Many nationalities can buy it online in advance (the e-VOA) and skip the payment queue at the airport. Check the current rules for your passport.
Going back: the departure transfer
Same car, the other way, same price. For an international flight, leave Canggu or Seminyak about three and a half hours before departure and Ubud about four; Nusa Dua and Jimbaran can leave later. Evening departures cross the island at its slowest hour, so we build the margin in and you don't have to.
Late flight and a noon checkout? Book a driver day for the last day instead. Your bags stay in the car, you see Tanah Lot or Uluwatu at sunset, and the day ends at the departures door. Tell us the flight time and we plan the day backwards from it.
What changes the price
- More than three people, or a lot of luggage. The Toyota Hiace takes up to eleven, one price for the van.
- A hotel further out — Ubud, the north, the east — is outside the $20 fare. We confirm the price on WhatsApp before you book, never on arrival.
- Two drop-offs, for friends at another hotel. Say so in the request.
- A child seat — ask when you book and tell us the child's age.
Questions people ask us
What if my flight is delayed?
The pickup moves with it. Send the flight number with your request, and if the flight is delayed or changes, tell us on WhatsApp — we confirm the new time there.
Is a ride app cheaper than a transfer?
For one or two people with light bags going to Kuta or Seminyak, often a little. For a family with luggage, a late landing or a hotel in Canggu or Ubud, a fixed-price car at the exit usually costs about the same and saves the walk and the wait.
Can I book the transfer and a tour together?
Yes — most guests do. Keep the arrival evening free, and put the first long day on day two or three, once you have slept.
Where exactly does the driver wait?
Just outside the arrivals exit, behind the barrier where the drivers stand with name boards. He messages you on WhatsApp when you land and again when he is in place.
