Where to stay in Bali: Canggu, Seminyak, Ubud or Dalung?

Short answer
Two bases, not four: the south (Seminyak for restaurants, Sanur for calm) plus two or three nights around Ubud. Canggu is fun and has the worst traffic in Bali. Our village in Dalung suits guests who want a real neighbourhood and 07:00 starts — no beach, but a rooftop pool and tours from the gate.
The honest map
Bali's problem is not distance, it's traffic. The south — Canggu, Seminyak, Kuta, Sanur, the Bukit — is one crowded corner of the island. Ubud is an hour and a half north of it on a good morning. Everything else is a day trip. Where you sleep decides how much of your holiday you spend in the car.

Two bases, not four
The most common mistake we see is a new hotel every two nights. Each move costs half a day. For a week: four nights in the south (Seminyak or Sanur depending on your age and noise tolerance) and three around Ubud. For ten days, add two nights in the north or east — Munduk, Lovina or Amed — and do the far sights from there instead of as a nine-hour round trip.
What a village street is like at seven in the morning
Our guest house is in Dalung, on Jalan Cempaka: a two-lane village road with a small temple, a warung that sells coffee in a plastic bag, motorbikes taking children to school, and roosters. It is not Seminyak and it does not try to be. Guests who like it are the ones who want to see how the island actually lives, want to leave at 07:00 for a tour without an hour of traffic first, and don't mind driving 20 minutes to a beach club for the evening. It is $40 a night for a wooden bungalow with a kitchenette and a rooftop pool, and the tours leave from the gate.
If you only have four nights
Stay in one place. Seminyak if you want restaurants and the beach; Sanur if you have children or want quiet; Ubud if you came for rice fields and don't care about the sea. Do the rest as day trips with a driver.
Which area for the tours?
All our routes pick up in Canggu, Seminyak, Kuta, Sanur, Nusa Dua, Jimbaran and Ubud at no extra cost. From Ubud the central and east routes are shorter; from the south the Uluwatu and Tanah Lot days are. Amed, Lovina and Pemuteran pickups carry a surcharge because of the distance — if you are staying up there, a driver day from your hotel usually makes more sense than a set route.
Questions people ask us
Is Dalung near the beach?
Berawa and Canggu beaches are about 20 minutes by car or scooter; the airport is 45 minutes without traffic. It is a village, not a resort.
Ubud or the south first?
The south first if you land tired — it is 30 minutes from the airport and easy. Ubud in the middle. End in the south again if your flight is early; the drive from Ubud at 05:00 is fine but nobody enjoys it.
Do you pick up from villas?
Yes — send the villa name and a pin. Some Canggu lanes are too narrow for a car; your driver will tell you where to meet, usually a minute's walk.
