The nutmeg forest and temple at Sangeh, with its polite monkeys; a soak in the Angseri hot springs; and the wide rice terraces at Jatiluwih in the afternoon — a highland day with no hard walking.
Start at Sangeh, a grove of giant nutmeg trees around a moss-covered temple, where the macaques are calmer than Ubud's and the paths are flat and shaded. Drive up into the Tabanan highlands for the hot springs at Angseri, an hour of warm water in a river valley. Lunch above the paddies, then walk as much of Jatiluwih as you like in the afternoon light. About eight hours with your own driver.
Sangeh is what people hope the Ubud Monkey Forest will be — a real forest, a real temple, and monkeys that mostly mind their own business — and it's on the road to the highlands, so it fits a day that goes north.
The rest of the day is deliberately soft: warm water, a good lunch and the terraces when the light is best. It's the route we suggest for grandparents, small children, and anyone who has had enough of steps.

Putu was at the hotel right on time. We had Banyumala with very few people around, then the twin lakes and a slow lunch looking over Jatiluwih. He read the weather and swapped two stops so the walk stayed dry. Exactly the day the page describes.
The solo price was explained clearly before I booked — no surprises. Ketut stopped whenever I asked for photos and knew which warung to pick for lunch. The ATV and rafting were booked through him so I only paid once.
Afternoon rain in the highlands, so our driver reordered the route and we did the temple first. Sarongs were in the car. Nothing felt rushed and we were back at the villa at the time he said.
