A hike through the forest to the quietest of Bali's crater lakes, the temple on Lake Beratan, and Tanah Lot at sunset — north and west Bali in a single, well-paced day.
Climb to the highlands early for a guided walk through the forest around Lake Tamblingan, where the only sounds are birds and the paddle of a dugout canoe. Then Ulun Danu Beratan, the lake temple at Bedugul, and lunch by the water. In the afternoon drop back to the coast for Tanah Lot's cliff path and sunset over the sea temple. About eight hours with your own driver.
Most north-Bali days are a string of viewpoints. This one has a proper walk in it — the Tamblingan forest is old, cool and empty — and the two most photographed temples on the island at the right times of day, one in the morning mist and one at sunset.
It's also the route we suggest when a group can't agree: walkers get the forest, temple people get two of the best, and everyone gets the sunset.

A local guide leads a gentle 4–5 km loop through the forest to the lake shore and its old temples. Sometimes a canoe across; often nobody else.

Putu was at the hotel right on time. We had Banyumala with very few people around, then the twin lakes and a slow lunch looking over Jatiluwih. He read the weather and swapped two stops so the walk stayed dry. Exactly the day the page describes.
