Sekumpul Waterfall, Bali
Bali's tallest waterfall — seven falls dropping 80 metres into a jungle amphitheatre — and its hardest walk: 45 minutes of steps and a river crossing each way.
What is Sekumpul like, and how hard is it?
Sekumpul is a group of falls in the hills above Singaraja that together make the most spectacular waterfall on the island — a wall of green with white water pouring down it, seen first from a viewpoint and then from the base after a guided descent. The walk is the cost: hundreds of steps, a knee-deep river crossing, and a hot climb back. Fit adults and teenagers manage it; the viewpoint alone needs ten minutes. It's a long day from the south and the centrepiece of our Sekumpul & Bedugul route.

On the ground
Vast. From the upper viewpoint the falls fill the valley end — Sekumpul on the left, Fiji on the right, spray drifting up. The descent is concrete steps, then dirt, then a river you wade, then the base of the falls where the wind off the water soaks you in seconds. The pool is swimmable, cold and strong.
The village runs it as a guided package — the guide is compulsory for the base and knows which path has washed out this week. Lockers, a warung and toilets are at the top.
Don't do it on the day after the Batur trek, and don't do it at noon. Morning, water, shoes with grip, and accept that the way up is slow.

Before you go
How long should you stay? Three hours with the descent; thirty minutes for the viewpoint only. It's a full morning on the Sekumpul & Bedugul route.
Best time to visit. Morning in the dry season. After a storm the river crossing closes and the village offers the viewpoint only.

Asked in the car
Can we see it without the walk?
Yes — the upper viewpoint is ten minutes from the gate and shows all seven falls. You miss the spray, not the view.
How fit do we need to be?
Able to climb 40 minutes of steps in heat without stopping much. Regular walkers and teenagers are fine; knee problems, no.
Is there a swim?
At the base, yes — cold and strong near the fall, calmer at the edge of the pool. Most people go in briefly.
