What is Kebun Raya Bedugul like, and is it worth visiting?
Kebun Raya Bali is the island's botanic garden, a kilometre from the lake temple at Bedugul: a vast, quiet park of native highland forest with collections of orchids, ferns, bamboo, cacti and medicinal plants, wide lawns for picnics, and the Bali Treetop park of zip-lines and rope bridges in the trees. You can drive through it. It's for families, walkers and anyone who wants an hour of green without a temple in it.

On the ground
Big, cool and unhurried. A candi bentar gate, a long avenue of trees, and then a network of roads and paths through forest and themed gardens — the orchid house, the fern garden, the cactus glasshouse, a lake with a pavilion. You can drive between sections, which matters with children or in rain.
The Treetop Adventure Park in the north corner has circuits of zip-lines, nets and swinging logs from easy to hard, for ages four and up, with harnesses and staff. It's a couple of hours on its own.
It's the Bedugul stop for a day when the temple is done in twenty minutes and you want to stay in the cool. Bring a picnic; the lawns are made for it.

How long should you stay? An hour for a walk and the orchids; three with the treetop park. Ask us to add it to the north-Bali day.

Is it good for children?
Very — lawns to run on, a lake with a pavilion, and the treetop park from age four. It's the best rainy-morning option in the highlands too.
Can we drive inside?
Yes, on the garden roads between sections, with a car ticket. Useful with small children and in rain.
How does it fit a tour day?
Swap it for the waterfall on the north-Bali route, or for Sangeh on the Aling-Aling day — say so and we build it in.
