The east-Bali temple day with a cave in it: Penglipuran's bamboo village, the cave temple of Goa Raja on the slopes below Besakih, and the mother temple itself with a local guide.
East early to Penglipuran, the village of matching gateways where the families still live. Then up towards Agung to Pura Goa Raja, a small cave temple where a spring runs out of the rock and priests hold blessings — quiet, damp and genuinely holy. Lunch facing the mountain, then Besakih's 23 temples on the terraces above, with a guide who explains what you're seeing. About eight hours with your own driver.
Goa Raja is the difference from our other east-Bali day. It's the kind of small temple Balinese families visit for a blessing before a big event, and it shows you the intimate side of a religion that Besakih shows at full scale an hour later.
Penglipuran first is the gentle start; the mountain in the afternoon is the climb. It's a day about how the island prays, and it's quiet — Bangli sees a fraction of Ubud's visitors.

Usually, if a priest is present — he sprinkles holy water and presses rice to your forehead. It takes five minutes and a small donation, and it's offered to everyone respectfully dressed.
Kehen is a big hillside temple in Bangli town; Goa Raja is a small cave temple on the mountain. Same start, same finish, a different middle — choose the cave if you want the more personal hour.
Penglipuran is a flat stroll; Goa Raja is a few steps; Besakih is stairs and terraces for an hour or so at a gentle pace.

Putu was at the hotel right on time. We had Banyumala with very few people around, then the twin lakes and a slow lunch looking over Jatiluwih. He read the weather and swapped two stops so the walk stayed dry. Exactly the day the page describes.
The solo price was explained clearly before I booked — no surprises. Ketut stopped whenever I asked for photos and knew which warung to pick for lunch. The ATV and rafting were booked through him so I only paid once.
Afternoon rain in the highlands, so our driver reordered the route and we did the temple first. Sarongs were in the car. Nothing felt rushed and we were back at the villa at the time he said.
