Two ways to see the countryside around Ubud that aren't from a car: an ATV ride through paddies, jungle and river, and a horse ride on the beach or through a village — your choice of pace on each.
An early pickup, then two hours on ATVs through rice fields, plantation tracks, a river crossing and a tunnel north of Ubud — single or tandem quads, a guide in front. Change and lunch, then the horses: a ride along a black-sand beach at sunset for the romantic version, or through villages and paddies for the scenic one, with an instructor for beginners and a faster group for riders. About eight hours with your own driver moving you between the two.
Both activities live in the countryside the tours drive past, and both are run by good operators with proper gear and guides who actually adjust to you: a first-time rider gets a walk with a lead, an experienced one gets a canter on the sand.
It's the day for a group with mixed nerve. The ATVs are all-out mud and noise; the horses are calm and slow unless you ask otherwise. Everyone ends up with a story.

Long trousers and closed shoes for both (the stables insist), clothes that can get muddy for the ATV, a change, sunscreen, a hat for the beach, and cash for the two operators.

Most guests haven't. You get a calm horse, a helmet, an instructor on foot or beside you, and a walk-and-trot ride. Nobody is put on a fast horse by accident.
Horses: usually 100 kg maximum and riders from about six with a lead. ATVs: solo from 16, tandem passengers from about 7. We confirm with the operators when you book.
The ATV goes ahead — mud is the point. The stables postpone in heavy rain; your driver swaps the afternoon for a waterfall or reschedules the ride.
Only after we confirm the date — by bank transfer, within 48 hours of our confirmation. Sending a request costs nothing.

Putu was at the hotel right on time. We had Banyumala with very few people around, then the twin lakes and a slow lunch looking over Jatiluwih. He read the weather and swapped two stops so the walk stayed dry. Exactly the day the page describes.
The solo price was explained clearly before I booked — no surprises. Ketut stopped whenever I asked for photos and knew which warung to pick for lunch. The ATV and rafting were booked through him so I only paid once.
Afternoon rain in the highlands, so our driver reordered the route and we did the temple first. Sarongs were in the car. Nothing felt rushed and we were back at the villa at the time he said.
