East Bali's cultural day: the tidiest village on the island at Penglipuran, the terraced temple of Kehen in Bangli, and Besakih, the mother temple, on the slopes of Mount Agung.
Drive east early to Penglipuran, a village of matching bamboo gateways and stone lanes where the families still live and still sweep. On to Pura Kehen in Bangli, a temple climbing a hillside under a banyan tree, usually empty. Lunch with a view of Agung, then Besakih — the largest and holiest temple complex in Bali, 23 temples on the mountain's flank — with a guide who explains what you're looking at. Besakih is the temple every Balinese hopes to pray at, and it makes more sense after Penglipuran and Kehen: village, district, island — the same architecture at three scales. We do it in that order so the big one lands.
Bangli is the least-visited regency in Bali and the roads are quiet. You'll see ceremonies in progress, women carrying offerings, and almost no other visitors until Besakih.

The outer and middle courtyards of the main temple and the paths between the others, yes. The innermost courtyards are for worshippers; the guide shows you where to stand and when.
It used to be a problem. The regulated gate with shuttle and guide fixed most of it; go with the official guide, pay at the counter, and it's a calm visit.
Not in the same day — it's another hour east and a two-hour queue. Ask about an east-Bali driver day starting at 05:00 if the photo matters to you.

Putu was at the hotel right on time. We had Banyumala with very few people around, then the twin lakes and a slow lunch looking over Jatiluwih. He read the weather and swapped two stops so the walk stayed dry. Exactly the day the page describes.
