Tegenungan Waterfall, Bali
The waterfall closest to the coast — wide, loud, 15 minutes from Ubud, with steps down to a pool you can swim in and cafés on the rim for the view.
What is Tegenungan like, and when should you go?
Tegenungan is a single wide fall on the Petanu river south of Ubud, seen first from a viewpoint at the top and then from the bottom after a flight of concrete steps. The pool below is safe for a swim in the dry season; after rain the river is brown and strong and swimming is closed. It's the easiest waterfall to reach from the south — 45 minutes from Sanur, 15 from Ubud — which is why it's busy. Go early or late.

On the ground
Developed: a car park, cafés with the viewpoint, a 'Love' sign, and a lot of steps down. At the bottom the fall is wide and powerful, the spray is constant, and the pool to the side is calm enough to swim. A path continues to the top of the fall on the far side.
It's not wild and it isn't trying to be. It is close, it has a real swim, and the steps are safe — which makes it the waterfall we use on family days and as the last stop after the zoo or the monkey forest.
After heavy rain the river turns brown and the current crosses the pool; the guards close swimming and the spray at the bottom soaks everything. The view from the top is still good.

A path on the far side climbs to the lip; a different angle and fewer people.
The rim cafés
Coffee with the fall below; the view is the reason to stop before the steps.

Asked in the car
Can we swim?
In the dry season, yes, in the pool beside the fall. After rain the river is strong and the guards close it — the view is still worth the steps.
How many steps?
About 150 each way, concrete with handrails. Fine for most; slow with small children.
Is it worth it if we're doing the north-Bali waterfalls?
Not especially — Banyumala and Sekumpul are wilder. Tegenungan earns its place as the easy one on a family or Ubud day.
