A shaded, walkable zoo in Gianyar with orangutans, elephants, a petting zoo and a splash pool — the safest bet on the island with children under ten.
What is Bali Zoo like, and is it worth it?
Bali Zoo is small enough to walk in a morning and shaded enough to enjoy in the heat: paths under trees between orangutans, Sumatran elephants, gibbons, deer you can feed, a reptile house and a petting zoo. It's 30 minutes south of Ubud on the road from the coast, has proper toilets and a café, and its breakfast with the orangutans is the one animal experience in Bali we'd actually book.

On the ground
Green and calm — more a park with animals than a big zoo. The paths loop past the enclosures under real forest; the orangutan island and the elephant area are the highlights, and the petting zoo and deer feeding keep small children busy for an hour.
The zoo has moved away from hands-on animal contact in recent years: no elephant rides, no holding the orangutans. Feeding and keeper talks are the interaction now, and the animals look better for it.
It's the expensive gate on the island — foreign-visitor tickets are several times the price of a temple — but it's a whole morning, and the breakfast package is good value if you'd do it anyway.

Sumatran elephants at the eastern end; buy fruit at the stand.

A shallow water-play area — bring swimwear for under-eights.

A swim after the zoo; the pairing on our family route.
Entrance fees are in the price of our set routes; on a car + driver day they are paid at the gate, and your driver tells you the amounts the evening before.

Before you go
How long should you stay? Two to three hours; a whole morning with the breakfast. It's the first stop on two of our family routes.
Best time to visit. Opening at nine, when the animals are fed and the paths are cool. Avoid the middle of the day.

Bali Zoo or Bali Safari?
The zoo for under-tens: closer, shadier, smaller. Bali Safari for a bigger day out with the tram and shows, and for the night safari.
Can we hold the animals?
Not the orangutans or big animals any more. Feeding deer and the petting zoo are hands-on; the rest is close-up viewing.
How much is it?
Foreign-visitor tickets are several hundred thousand rupiah per adult — the zoo's own price, paid at the gate or online. We tell you the current figure when you book a family route.
